A Royal Treasure Unveiled:
Catherine of Aragon Prototype Character Jug
A remarkable piece of Royal Doulton history emerges from the archives
From the archives of Royal Doulton, we’re thrilled to present an extraordinary opportunity for collectors: the Catherine of Aragon Prototype Jug, featuring a rare scroll handle. This large-size jug was designed by Royal Doulton modeler Alan Maslankowski and was made with a scroll handle which differs from the production version which featured the tower of Kimbolton Castle, making it a unique find. There is also a prototype trumpet handle version of this jug known to exist.
This distinctive scroll handle design was never released for mass production, as the Kimbolton Castle tower handle was selected since that was where Catherine spent her last years in loneliness and sorrow. Perhaps this scroll handle prototype was intended to represent King Henry’s decree that banished her to the castle tower. This unique prototype version is exceptionally rareand was last sold at the Doulton Archives sale of 1999. It has now re-surfaced just in time for Christmas for one lucky collector to add to their collection.
