Introducing an Exclusive Royal Doulton Santa Claus Prototype Jug with Christmas Cracker Handle
We are proud to present an extraordinary piece of Royal Doulton history—the exclusive Santa Claus Prototype Jug with a Christmas cracker handle, a design that was never put into mass production. Personally selected by Ed Pascoe from the iconic Royal Doulton Archive, this jug is a rare find for the dedicated collector.
Unmatched Historical Value and Provenance
This unique prototype jug featuring Santa Claus with a distinctive Christmas cracker handle was modeled in 1987 by E. Chawner. It was created in both a green and yellow variation, with the yellow version documented on page 290 of A Century of Royal Doulton Character & Toby Jugs by Stephen Mullins. The design was ultimately never put into production, as the Christmas cracker handle was considered too distinctly British. Instead, a candy cane handle was introduced in 1988 to broaden its appeal. Only a handful of these Christmas cracker handle jugs were ever produced, making this piece exceptionally rare and highly collectible.
In the late 1990s, Royal Doulton began to release select pieces from this archive, making them available to the public for the first time. Ed Pascoe, recognizing the historical and artistic significance of these rare items, acquired several exclusive pieces, including this Santa Claus jug. The BJ number on the jug authenticates its original archive location, while the initials MC mark the painter responsible for this remarkable work.
