“Something else that Royal Doulton did that was very clever is produce limited editions,” says Ed Pascoe. A set number is made, and no more. When the edition is sold out, the figure is gone for good, and collectors know exactly how many exist.

One of only 200
The Beekeeper HN5197 was issued in 2008 for the Prestige collection, Royal Doulton’s line for its most ambitious models, in an edition of 200 worldwide.
Shane Ridge modeled it, and Ed calls it quite a complicated figurine: the veil over the straw hat, the smoker in one gloved hand and a frame from the hive in the other, the white hives stacked behind him, a basket of honey jars at his feet. It stands eleven and three quarter inches tall.

“Bees are a very, very popular subject,” Ed says. “This is a subject that still resonates well with people.”
