Charles Vyse

Charles Vyse modeled Royal Doulton’s first figurine DarlingHN1 in 1913 and then went on to open his own studio in London with his wife Nell. During the 1920s and 30s, they created a succession of flower sellers, entertainers, and other characters from the streets of London.

Each figure was painted differently and the women wear vividly patterned costumes with free-hand stripes and floral sprays. The flowers were painstakingly created petal by petal in moist clay and arranged in baskets, bouquets, button-holes, and nosegays. Fruits and vegetables were given the same intricate detailing as can be seen in the bags of the old woman returning from the street market on Saturday NightCall us now if you would like a free book featuring the work of Charles and Nell Vyse.
