One of the greatest eras in English history was when the Tudors ruled England. Starting with Henry VII’s coronation in 1485, this royal family was responsible for bringing the Renaissance to England. King Henry VIII was notorious for his six marriages and England’s break from the Church of Rome.
Henry VIII (1509-1547)
The great Tudor king notorious for his six wives.
Divorced, beheaded, died… divorced, beheaded survived..
Henry’s six wives have become defined not so much by their lives as the way these lives ended
Catherine of Aragon (married 1509-1533)
A devoted wife for 20 years, Catherine was the mother of Mary I but her failure to produce a male heir led to divorce.
Ann Boleyn (married 1533-1536)
Ann was pregnant with Elizabeth when she was crowned. Her failure to produce a son led to her demise.
Jane Seymour (married 1536-1537)
After just 18 months on the throne, Jane died after giving birth to the King’s long awaited son, Edward.
Anne of Cleves (married 1540)
Henry likened Anne’s looks to a Flanders mare and she was promised an ‘honored position’ as ‘the King’s sister’ if she divorced.
Catherine Howard (married 1540-1542)
Henry loved his ‘dainty Kate’ who was half his age but she was beheaded for adultery.
Catherine Parr (married 1543-1547)
Catherine survived marriage to the ailing king and married again a few months after his death.
