At the birth of Venus, goddess of love, bushes of white roses appeared where the sea touched the earth. In a later legend, drops of her blood turned the roses red. Roses are thus seen as a special attribute of Venus and symbols of love for Valentines. Cupid is cited as the culprit behind the rose’s thorns, which were created by a flurry of arrows from his magical quill which missed their mark. This exquisite little Doulton vase dates from the 1890s and features roses set in an unusual jeweled gold ground. A beautiful Royal Doulton or Lladro piece adorned with roses would also be a cherished gift for your Valentine.
