Love is in the Air

As Valentine’s Day approaches our thoughts turn to love and romance. Now is the time to choose a special gift for your sweetheart. One of Leslie Harradine’s most delightful figurines for Royal Doulton depicts Cupid being punished In the Stocks. In classical mythology, Cupid uses a bow and arrow to inspire romantic love. He has just shot his arrow in Lladro’s beautiful Gondola of Love, propelled by a fellow amorini.

Cupid was the son of Mars, the god of war, and Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty and desire. In Greek myths, he was known as Eros and his mother was Aphrodite. The goddess was born of sea-foam and is often depicted emerging from the water on a clam shell, as in the famous painting by Botticelli. Lladro’s stunning Birth of Venus shows a Botticelli style goddess riding the waves in a chariot drawn by three hippocampi or seahorses.
