Description
Maroon robes, green leaves and purple grapes adorn the head. In Greek and Roman mythology, Bacchus was the god of wine and nature, inspiring men and women to appreciate music and poetry. "Bacchanalia" the harvest celebrations to honor him, were reputed to be such orgies of excess that the Roman government had them banned. Some of the earlier versions of the miniature jug had the leaves on the vine handle painted green. The city of Stoke-on-Trent, founded in 1910 as an amalgamation of six smaller Staffordshire pottery towns, celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1960. To commemorate this occasion, Royal Doulton produced a very limited edition of three large-size character jugs: Bacchus, Capt. Henry Morgan, and Izaak Walton. These jugs, adorned with a special backstamp, were given to dignitaries attending the celebration, courtesy of the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Alderman Harold Clowes, and Lady Mayoress, Miss Christine Clowes.
