Description
The terracotta panel "The First Hour of the Crucifixion" by the ceramic artist George Tinworth was created in 1876. This unique hand-sculpted piece was presented to the bishop of York as an example of what could be possible as an altarpiece for York Minster. Because this model was so impressive, the bishop commissioned Tinworth to make a larger altarpiece which now resides in the northeast corner of the Minster in St. Stephen's Chapel. Tinworth was a deeply religious man who worked with the bible at his side and wanted his work to accurately reflect the holy word. The relief shows early afternoon on Good Friday while the other two crosses are just being erected.
