Made at Burslem: Royal Doulton Flambé and Kingsware

Ed Pascoe with a table of Royal Doulton flambé, Kingsware and a red-haired Clown character jug

"What you are looking at now is a group of pieces made by Royal Doulton at their Burslem factory." Ed Pascoe recorded this table of new arrivals to show how much one works could make. Burslem is one of the towns of Stoke-on-Trent, a district that once held more than five hundred potteries, and Doulton's factory there turned out figures, flambé, Kingsware and character jugs side by side.

A Mandarin of which two are known

The pale figure in Ed's hands is the Mandarin, HN641, designed by Charles Noke and made in the early 1920s. "There's only a couple of these known in the world," Ed says. It stands eight and a quarter inches high.

The clown with red hair

Harry Fenton's Clown was introduced as a character jug in 1937 with a white face and either red or brown hair, and production stopped with the war. Ed calls the red-haired one "one of the rarest character jugs".

Kingsware

Kingsware is the dark treacle-glazed stoneware Doulton began at Burslem at the turn of the century, with the figures modelled in relief and picked out in amber. Much of it was made for the whisky trade, which is why so much of it is flasks, jugs and pitchers. Ed's table had a Kingsware clock with the night watchman on it and the bottle called Chadband, named for the preacher in Bleak House, finished with a silver top and a silver rim.

Flambé

Flambé came out of the same works a few years later: copper glazes fired so that the red runs into black, never the same way twice. Charles Noke, Doulton's art director at Burslem, was behind both. The Moor on Ed's table is one of the figures he designed for it.
